Theobald’s work engages with traces left behind by day-to-day life and issues of identity and memory. Her practice forms a relationship with a particular place, person or event through observation, collecting, sorting, and painting. She makes paintings from a range of source materials, collecting objects and images before working from observation to make detailed drawings of the collection. Finally she sifts and sorts through the drawings, collected objects and photos and organizes them into small assemblages/ sets some of which will directly inform her paintings.

The selection of work chosen for HYG Editions is part of an ongoing series exploring the body. She is interested in its changing states; how it works, falls apart, repairs, decays, its strengths and fragility. In these prints the hero kills (or gets killed by) his rival, usually as a result of conflict, but all is resolved when the ‘doctor’ steps in to revive the fallen champion. Death and resurrection is a primary theme.
