Thursday 10th of March. 3 to 5 pm. Steph Goodger / Stella Winskell-Moore in conversation with John Flannery ( Art Speak )

Steph Goodger will present a talk on the Paris Commune of 1871, early photojournalism and her work around these topics.

An anonymous photograph entitled, Insurges Non-Réclamés, and another, attributed to Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri, Insurgents killed during Bloody Week, both show dead Communards lying in their coffins. These men of the Paris Commune of 1871, are lined up vertically, carefully arranged for the photograph. Photographers of the Commune capitalised in different ways on the capacity of the medium for posing and staging. It appears that the Commune and subsequently the Government, after it regained Paris, recorded the dead for identification purposes.

Les Non-Réclamés ( the work selected for Blind Plural ) elaborates on the staged nature of the photographs. The ever shifting speculations about the images fuel the intrigue over the many baffling details they contain. There is too, a general sense of emptiness, of watching people fading from the world. Such a painting is unresolvable, at best it is able to bring into being some of the rich contrasts and oppositions present in the subject.

Stella Winskell-Moore in conversation with John Flannery.

Stella Winskell-Moore`s sculptures represent the emotional, psychological and physical effects while coming to terms with being diagnosed with progressive and degenerative disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis.*

She is an artist working in textiles and other media. In 2014 when the pain and swelling in her hands made it difficult for her to work, she sought medical help and was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. She knew from the experience of family members just how the devastating RA can be. She was however determined to carry on with her work as an artist. One of her aims is to exhibit her work in ways that disturb and challenge the emotions, and raise public awareness of this disability.

John Flannery is the host of the radio programme Art Speak at Reel Rebel Radio. He is at present working with Stella in her studio, where she is casting his hands for an art work. John was also diagnosed with RA.

* What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

RA is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues as if they were foreign substances.

The course of RA is unpredictable, but after many years about 10% of people with it become severely disabled and have a hard time with even the most basic tasks. Some cases of RA have prolonged remissions in which symptoms vanish for several years. Others have flares and remissions. No two cases of rheumatoid arthritis are exactly alike and the disease course is unpredictable.
