Terry Day began improvising on the drums in a duet with his brother Pat in 1955, and in 1960 formed an improvising trio of piano, bass & drums. Since the early 1960’s he has been a First Generation Pioneer of Improvisation, Free Jazz & experimental music, having collaborated with many improvising musical luminaries, groups, dancers, painters, poets and artists from around the world. For this September afternoon session Terry Day returns to Hundred Years Gallery with a very special group of collaborators.

Originally a physicist, John Butcher left academia in 1982 and has since become a prominent figure of the UK experimental music scene. His work ranges through improvisation, composition, multitracked saxophone pieces and explorations with feedback and extreme acoustics. He is well known as a solo performer who attempts to engage with a sense of place.

David Toop is a musician/composer, author and curator born in 1949. He studied fine art and graphic design in the late 1960s, then in 1971-2 participated as guitarist and flautist in the first improvisation workshops led by jazz drummer John Stevens. Having played improvised music since the beginning of the 1970s with musicians such as Paul Burwell, Steve Beresford, Max Eastley, Hugh Davies, Terry Day, Peter Cusack, Sally Potter and Lol Coxhill, he also recorded shamanistic ceremonies in Amazonas, presented programmes for BBC Radio 3 and appeared on Top Of The Pops with the Flying Lizards.

Elaine Mitchener is a classically trained vocalist noted for her mixture of styles drawing from sources as varied as classical music, gospel, jazz and experimental/free-improvisation. She has worked with countless international improvisers and experimentalists, as well as having been a featured broadcaster on BBC R3 ‘Hear and Now’ and CD Review. Extra-curricular activities include gigs as a vocalist with Aphex Twin and Goldie
