Terry Day began improvising on the drums in a duet with his brother Pat in 1955, and in 1960 formed an improvising trio of piano, bass & drums. Since the early 1960’s he has been a First Generation Pioneer of Improvisation, Free Jazz & experimental music, having collaborated with many improvising musical luminaries, groups, dancers, painters, poets and artists from around the world. For this July afternoon session Terry Day returns to Hundred Years Gallery with a select group of his most regular recent collaborators.
Hannah Marshall is a cellist who is continuing to extract, invent, and exorcize as many sounds and emotional qualities from her instrument as she can. She studied Music at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and with John Stevens ‘Community Music LTD’. Groups she plays with include: The London Improvisers Orchestra, Alex Ward Quintet, Luc Ex & Veryan Weston, Mopomoso & Trio of Uncertainty. She is co-artistic director of The Ding Foundation, making visual theatre since 2001.
Tom Jackson is a clarinettist and saxophonist based in London, largely dedicated to the fields of contemporary classical music and free improvisation. He has performed as principal clarinet with many orchestras including New London Sinfonia and British Sinfonietta and National Chamber Orchestra of Wales. He has worked with various contemporary chamber groups such as Apartment House, Lontano, Plus-Minus and Cardiff New Music Collective, which he co- founded. He is an active session musician, playing for albums and live shows.
London based Tom Wheatley is one of the new generation of UK improvisers. He has a fearless approach to the double bass and, along with all of the musicians in this session, makes a welcome return to Hundred Years Gallery.
Expect duo and quartet sets full of invention and energy.
