The pieces on show are chosen works from specific series from each artist which relate to or speak the language of representation on symbolic, mythical or poetic terms.

<img class="alignleft wp-image-3186" title="Anna Burel.
This kind of process can impersonate the artist`s experience of her/his world. It could generate artificial spaces and characters which mask an innermost desire of the artist: that this fiction or representation will contain a degree of the intensity of the “real”, as it is experienced, and therefore transcend its own “fictional” qualities.

It is through this imagining that the creative person re-appropriates for her/himself the rights for a lyrical, humoristic, tragic, etc discourse and therefore a questioning of her/his own sense of reality.
This exhibition presents such discourse through the work of four artists working with painting, photography and collage, works responsive to their experience and what they might consider their own created or borrowed narratives.

What are Iranian artists making in Britain today?

In this group show the works elicit alternatives to traditional perceptions by presenting a sceptical prism through which to view the narrowness of binary thinking. Each piece seeks truth across a designated divide, for example between the personal and the global, who we are and who we might be or between here and another place. Yet binary awareness, arguably a social state we are universally born into, causes a very necessary tension in our lives – a vicissitude which moves us to seek to define who we are, whether as individuals or as a society. These artists, by exploring the auto-didactic journey towards self-fulfilment within and without oneself, contribute to a universal becoming in which we all play a part.

The exhibition title stems from John Berger’s statement in Ways of Seeing that Rembrandt’s style, in a self-portrait of himself and his new wife ‘is no more than the style of a new performer playing a traditional role‘ and relates to the cataclysms around Iranian art viewed abroad. For too long ideas of Iran and the diaspora have been tainted by pre-conceived assumptions fed by media. A common dialectic for example is: are other countries able to fully appreciate that Iranian art can make religious references in a secular, merely cultural context? Another is, does a desire for freedom from tradition or religion in Iran and the region necessarily mean the alternative is Western ideology?

With this in mind, we examine what Iranian artists in Britain are making today in an exhibition that seeks to pursue and manage perceptions – of our own as we seek answers, and of those who behold us as we seek.

About the artists:

Koushna Navabi
Born in Iran, working in London Navabi is a mixed media artist using a variety of fascinating mediums. She has exhibited widely in UK and internationally in group and solo shows. Her work explores the complex relationships between east and west, and corporeal politics.
Nooshin Farhid
Primarily concerned with moving image in the form of single screen works, installations, interventions and animation she is also working to great impact with still photography and text.
Alinah Azadeh
She uses live encounters, sculpture, digital data, textile and text to create spaces for human exchange and personal self-reflection in response to themes of human experience. Large scale public commissions include The Bibliomancer’s Dream (2009, Southbank Centre), The Gifts(2010, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery), Portraits of the Unseen(2010 The National Portrait Gallery) London. Neda Dana-Haeri
Born in Iran and working in London, Dana-Haeri has been a curator and fine artist for over a decade. Having graduated under Bob and Roberta Smith she has taken part in many group shows. Dana-Haeri creates fine, abstract print and painted canvas works that look at contemporary concerns from a deeply philosophical and poetic angle.
Andrew Khosravani
Born in London where he still lives Khosravani is an illustrator, animator and designer. A young and recent art graduate he creates involved, imposing prints in coloured pencil and mixed material with a tendency to abstraction of subject matter presented as recognisable forms.
Maral Pourkazemi
Born in Germany, Pourkazemi is based in London where she creates works of design that demonstrate an intricate thought process around human values. We show her large panels on the censorship of the Iranian internet that feature intriguing designs based on the traditional geometry found in Persian carpets.

A culture sharing exhibition.

Taking its name from an ancient Mesoamerican process, used to prepare maize for making foodstuffs such as corn tortillas, N I X T A M A L is a celebration of ingenuity and an early technology. An exhibition of Illustration works, a talk on the Aztecs and the opportunity to engage in the art of tortilla making.

‘Nixtamal’ is an Aztec word, which describes corn that has undergone a lime treating process. Partially cooked and soaked, in a solution of Calcium hydroxide (slaked lime), which is the resulting compound when water is mixed with quicklime – heated limestone. The Mesoamerican cultures, inclusive of the Aztecs, would grind corn against the limestone found in the riverbeds, and so naturally discovered the benefits of this natural element when combined with the corn, a practice that unlocks key nutrients from the maize.

The process of nixtamalisation was first developed in Mesoamerica where maize was originally cultivated and is still used domestically in this region. There is no precise date for when the technology was developed, but the earliest evidence of this process is found in Guatemala’s southern coast, with equipment dating from 1200-1500BCE.

We asked three Illustrators to produce artwork based on this process, providing an informative subject matter in an opportunity to research and interpret a strong part of another or one’s own culture. N I X T A M A L is a group show featuring work by Adam Bletchly, Oliver Flores and Livi Gosling, Curated by Stephanie Odu.

Adam Bletchly

Adam is an Illustrator/Designer based in South East London. He draws a lot of inspiration from old printed media and typography. Enjoying everything from old adverts and magazines to packaging and clothing. He works using scanned pencil drawings as a guide, replicating the worn out look through use of specially created textures and a reduced colour palette. Though he mainly works digitally, the hand rendered aesthetic is always present with imperfect lines and strokes.

http://adambletch.com

Oliver Flores

Oliver Flores is a Mexican Illustrator living and working in Guadalajara, Mexico. He has worked for a diverse range of projects in the fields of Art, Illustration and Graphic Design. His images are natural and convey sincerity, capturing the essence of the characters and stories to create a connection with the audience. His work produced for this exhibition entitled Corazón de maíz (Heart of Corn) draws inspiration from geometric patterns found in maize and Mexican basketry.

http://oliverflores.com

Livi Gosling

“As part of their ‘making books with things, making things with books’ project, Laboratoro presents the Island Man Notebooks of writer Thom Punton.

In 2007 Thom decided to write a 7000 page book about a man who tries to live without human contact. In an attempt to find space to write alone the book was handwritten.

From 3 pm to 6 pm, visitors to the gallery are invited to read the unedited note books. Laboratoro and the author will be present, recording readings, discussing, being inquisitive and curious among the visitors who are invited to do the same and participate.
At 6 pm, Laboratoro, incorporating materials from the book and from the previous 3 hours interaction, will perform in the gallery basement.

Laboratoro brings together the talents of the musician and artist Ed Briggs and the Galician writer performer Xelís de Toro. They create electric, experimental, performances using the raw materials of words, sound and movement.

‘Oserake’ is the First Nation name for the winter quarters which were set up by the river,
the origin of the city of Montreal. This music/film shows what happens to Montreal in winter, when the wilderness takes over.
Overwhelming forces try to return the modern city to the time before today’s streets and blocks existed, and phantoms invade the empty white streets.
Massive snowdrifts, huge icicles and icefalls appear. Everything is transformed beneath layers of snow, and we glimpse what was seen by those who founded the original settlement, by this great river they called ‘the river that walks’, swept with ice.
The music is scored for a large ensemble of cellos and violas.
The second half is scored for six church organs.

Jaap Blonk is primarily self-taught both as a sound artist and as a visual/stage performer. He studied physics, mathematics, and musicology for a time, but did not complete his studies. One of his early influences was Kurt Schwitters, whose Ursonate he first heard in 1979; he memorized the entire work, and it became one of the cornerstones of his repertory; he has recited portions of the piece hundreds of times in various public places. His compositions and performances are examples of sound poetry, making use of words and phonetic snippets as well as clicks, hisses, and other vocal manipulations. He works as a solo performer, in collaboration with avant-garde musicians such as John Tchicai, Tristan Honsiger, and Mats Gustafsson, and with his own ensembles.

For this special show at Hundred Years Gallery he is joined by two major forces in UK Free improvisation, saxophonist Alan Wilkinson and percussionist Steve Noble.

Alan Wilkinson(b. London 1954) comes blazing out of a saxophone tradition that includes the likes of Ayler, Roscoe Mitchell, Mike Osborne, Evan Parker and Brötzmann, with a highly vocalized and personal style. Based in London since 1990 he first became known as part of the fertile Leeds scene of the ‘80s, founding the Termite Club and as a member of Hession/Wilkinson/Fell. Currently he has an acclaimed trio with John Edwards and Steve Noble, a Norwegian group with Kim Johanessen, Ola Hoyer and Dag Erik Knedal, a trio with James Dunn and John Bisset, recent collaborations with Chris Corsano, and American duo Talibam!, Spanish group Laxula, and plays regularly at his club flimflam in London. Previous collaborations have included Derek Bailey in duo and with Company; a quartet with Brötzmann, Fell, and Kellers; a trio with Rainer Kuhn and Willi Kellers; Alex Maguire’s Cat o’Nine Tails; Sunny Murray; Eddie Prevost; Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo; Stefan Jaworzyn; Spring Heel Jack. He has played at many national and international festivals and is featured on numerous recordings.

Steve Noble studied with Nigerian master drummer Elkan Ogunde and in the early 1980s was a member of Rip Rig and Panic, touring extensively throughout Europe and England. Since then he has been extensively involved in improvised music through work with a wide range of groups and musicians, including NEW, Derek Bailey, Lol Coxhill, Wadada Leo Smith, and Alex Ward.
