Before we close for August holidays, Hundred Years Gallery will be raising money for a good cause and having a little Summer party. We are cooking up some snacks for you, as you catch the last of ‘Rita Says: New Works’ & ‘Edge of the Land’. There will be prints, books and other artworks for sale. Gabriel Hardisty-Miller was an amazing young man who sadly died of a progressive neurological condition aged 25 a year ago on August 4th.
Gabriel changed how people think about disability and defied the usual preconceptions and expectations of a non-verbal person with autism. He never let his autism, or the further challenges of epilepsy, stop him from meeting people and going places.
Gabriel ran a successful music and cultural club night called PigPen in Hoxton with his close friend Ben Connors. He also inspired the politicians who met him and was at the forefront of campaigning for the Autism Act 2009, the first disability-specific law in England. He shared his story of living with autism, lobbied politicians and became one of the faces for the Think Differently About Autism campaign organised by the National Autistic Society (NAS), using his Yes-No communication device to get his point across.
As one of his friends said: “With his beauty, sense of style, wit and uncompromising attitude which set the bar high, Gabriel left a deep impression on all those who met him.”
We are proud to be selling two prints, one by Ben Connors and one by Mary Lemley, from a limited edition of 25 to raise funds for the year memorial of Gabriel’s death.
