Mark Wastell QuartetA welcome return performance from the Mark Wastell Quartet at Hundred Years.

The first half will feature a lengthy Quartet performance. The second set will see the regular foursome joined by special guests Ed Jones on reeds and Seth Bennett as third bassist.

Olie Brice is a jazz and improv double bassist. He is a member of the Riverloam trio (with Mikolaj Trzaska and Mark Sanders) and leads and composes for his own quintet (featuring Mark Hanslip, Alex Bonney, Waclaw Zimpel and Jeff Williams). He has also appeared with a wide range of musicians including Paul Dunmall, Tobias Delius, Achim Kaufmann, Ingrid Laubrock, Louis Moholo-Moholo and Ken Vandermark.

Dominic Lash is a double bassist, improviser, composer and writer. He has collaborated with musicians such as Tony Conrad, Evan Parker and the late Steve Reid. Current ensembles include his own Quartet (somewhat jazz-based), Consorts (drones and improvisation), The Set Ensemble (collaborative experimental music group) and a number of ensembles with clarinettist/guitarist Alex Ward. He also has an expanding repertoire of solo compositions; recent and forthcoming works written for him include Occam XVII by Eliane Radigue and a new work by Jürg Frey.

Mark Wastell has been active as a musician since 1995, making his initial concerts with the string trio IST featuring Rhodri Davies and Simon H. Fell. He has performed and recorded extensively and has collaborated with the likes of Derek Bailey, John Butcher, Evan Parker, Lasse Marhaug, Tony Conrad, Keith Rowe, John Zorn, Peter Kowald, Joachim Nordwall, Otomo Yoshihide, Burkhard Beins, Bernhard Gunter, Ed Jones and David Toop. Mark recently formed a new Quartet featuring Alan Wilkinson, Dominic Lash and Olie Brice. He also runs the Confront Recordings record label.

Alan Wilkinson comes blazing out of a saxophone tradition that includes the likes of Albert Ayler, Roscoe Mitchell, Mike Osborne, Evan Parker and Peter Brötzmann, with a highly vocalized and personal style and a firm belief in the undiluted potency of spontaneous creativity. Currently he has an acclaimed trio with John Edwards and Steve Noble; the Norwegian quartet Akode; the Founder Effect with John Coxon, Steve Noble, Pat Thomas; and Freefall with Thomas, Neil Charles, and Mark Sanders. Other projects have included a quartet with Brötzmann, Fell and Willi Kellers; Alex Maguire’s Cat o’Nine Tails; Derek Bailey’s Company weeks; and collaborations with NYC duo Talibam!, Thurston Moore, Chris Corsano, Eddie Prevost, Sunny Murray, Alex Schlippenbach,and Stefan Jaworzyn. He also runs and plays regularly at his club night flimflam in London. He has recently appeared at festivals in Oslo, twice in Sardinia, Kongsberg festival in Norway, Copenhagen Jazz festival and Nickelsdorf in Austria.

Saxophonist Ed Jones has been at the forefront of the British jazz scene for over twenty five years. His collaborations reflect his diverse musical interests: John Stevens, Evan Parker, George Benson, Dr Lonnie Smith, Charles Earland, Clifford Jarvis, Incognito, Us3, Nostagia 77, D’Angelo, Bootsy Collins, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Carlene Anderson, Noel McCoy and Omar.

Recently relocated to London from the North of England, Seth Bennett is an improvising double bassist and composer, active in contemporary jazz, free music, and folk music. In addition to running the trio Nut Club and low string quartet En Bas Quartet, he’s a busy collaborator on the British improvised music scene. He was recently described as “the most original double bassist working in the U.K. right now” by Lancaster Jazz Festival.
