This afternoon brings together four improvising minds for three sets of music:
Chie Nagai was born in Chiba, Japan in 1978 and graduated as a classical soprano at the Musashino Academia Musicae in Tokyo and the Music Academy of Kassel, where she also studied elementary music pedagogy. Specialising in contemporary music, she has premiered pieces of many composers, such as recent works by Yoshinao Kobayashi, Hyunbae Lee and Gabriel Fischer and also worked with composers Christian Wolff and Charlotte Seither. As an improviser, she utilises everyday objects and self-made percussion instruments along with her voice.
Ken Ikeda is a video artist and composer born in Tokyo (1964). He has exhibited sound art and visual installations around the world and has collaborated with, amongst others, painter Tadanoori Yokoo, artist Mariko Mori and composed and recorded for film maker David Lynch. He featured as part of Sonic Boom, at the Hayward Gallery, London in 2000 and as part of the Royal Academy’s ‘Apocalypse’ exhibition in 2001.

David William Stockard is an improviser/composer from Carrickfergus, (N.I.), currently living in London (U.K.). He tends to work collaboratively and has worked with a number of excellent artists and organisations. His music is concerned with: restraint; minutiae; the assiduous occupation of a miniscule space; privacy; obsession; clarity and ornaments; emergent phenomena; the deconstruction and redefinition of various forms, figures, and kinetic actions; awkwardness; instability and maintenance; slow-motion; focused self-examination and critique (of both the physical and the psychological); the synchronization and de-synchronization of bodies; lies.
Joshua R. Weitzel was born in Kassel, Germany in 1989. As an improviser and interpreter of contemporary music, he has played on several festivals and concerts in Germany, Japan, Israel and Switzerland. He plays guitar, shamisen and live electronics, sometimes simultaniously, and emphasizes japanese traditional musical concepts along with european approaches for his improvisation.
