Matilda Rolfsson / Richard Sanderson / Mark Wastell + Steve Noble & Daniel Thompson. Friday 1st April 7:30pm

Confront Recordings present two stellar combinations with recent releases on the label…

Richard Sanderson : amplified melodeon, dictaphones & small percussion / Mark Wastell : tam-tam, shruti box / Matilda Rolfsson : percussion

“…. the trio of Richard Sanderson (amplified melodeon, dictaphones and small percussion), Mark Wastell (tam-tam, shruti box) and Matilda Rolfsson (percussion) captured all that lay still in the air and produced a set of more, controlled, sensitive, beautiful and creative music. At times it was hard to exactly locate where the sounds emerged from as the melodeon clicked to the drone of cymbals pulled across the surface of a drum and the tam tam shimmered in response to electronic sound boxes. At one point a small cowbell signalled the music to develop in a new direction and then again small sounds of stones striking together and then hitting the wooden rim of the drum ushered in the fuller overtones of the gong against repetitive figures on the melodeon that rose to complete the piece. As I left familiar words, on the outside wall of the cafe, reminded me as long as I listen and “gaze on Waterloo sunset I am in paradise”. (Stuart Wilding).

Steve Noble : percussion / Daniel Thompson : acoustic guitar

“Steve Noble creates glittering bell and gong like tones over which Daniel Thompson hangs fractured harmonics and strange bending chords, moving to a more frenetic interplay between what is essentially a percussive guitarist and a melodic percussionist. This is the sound of instant creation happening before your ears, where the music can turn in an instant from a sombre evocation of a quasi-ritual nature, to a scurrying and mischievous ramble through scratches and thwacks- the kind of sympathetic, almost telepathic communication that only the best, and most revelatory free improvisation can provide. An engrossing listen from beginning to end, aided by an amazingly clear recording that balances Thompson’s acoustic guitar with Noble’s drums and percussion perfectly”. (Richard Sanderson)
