This afternoon’s concert is presented by the Aylesbury based tape label Structured Disasters. The primary aim of Structured Disasters is to make interesting music available for the curious (culturally awkward) in and around Buckinghamshire. The vision is that we bring the best artists from Aylesbury into the playing arena with musicians from London and around Britain, forging lasting connections and creating playing opportunities in a town not known for its cultural avant-garde.

Mark Browne has explored the possibilities of the saxophone for 30 years and has played with Alpha Males, The Unseemly Trio and is currently a member of the trio Crush!!! (with Sonic Pleasure and Ian MacGowan). Latterly incorporating percussion (gongs and cymbals) into his performance, Mark’s sense of bathos has been noted encompassing both the virtuosic and the inept. The sonic territory he maps touches the “spikiness of European free improvisation and the soul of free jazz with the jarring jump cuts of musique concrete and the textures of contemporary electronic music”.

Adam Bohman has been operating on the outer fringes of underground music for decades. Working with home-built instruments, found objects, tape cut-ups, collages, ink drawings and graphic scores. Favouring acoustic sounds over electronics, he explores the minute tendrils of sounds coaxed from any number of non-musical instruments and objects. He is a member of British experimental groups, Morphogenesis, The Bohman Brothers, Secluded Bronte, and The London Improvisers Orchestra. Adam’s music is unique and experimental, incorporating Fluxus japery, musique concrete, sound poetry and free improvisation.
Matt Scott is a composer and musician commissioned for film, theatre, television, radio, dance, visual art, and live performance. Work includes soundtracks for feature films, dramas, and documentaries screened worldwide, BBC TV & Radio, Channel 4, ITV, and Channel 5, music for plays at the Royal National Theatre, campaigns for Greenpeace and Oxfam, music for choreography at the Thailand Cultural Centre in Bangkok and The Place in London, and events in Europe and the U.S. including a commission for the Apriticielo Festival in Italy, where he built instruments from discarded medical equipment found in a decommissioned mental hospital. He plays accordion, piano, percussion, and sings solo and in groups on the London experimental music scene, and has toured in Europe and the US. He is a music producer, songwriter, arranger, orchestrator, and programmer, leads workshops, teaches, and promotes music and arts events. From London, he completed a Masters Degree in Composing at the National Film and Television School and received a Music Fellowship from the Omi International Arts Center in New York.
David Toop is a composer/musician, author and curator based in London, experienced in many fields of sound art and music, including improvisation, sound installations, field recordings, pop music production, music for television, theatre and dance. He has recorded Yanomami shamanism in Amazonas, appeared on Top of the Pops with the Flying Lizards, exhibited sound installations in Tokyo, Beijing and London’s National Gallery, and performed with artists ranging from John Zorn, Evan Parker, Bob Cobbing and Ivor Cutler to Akio Suzuki, Elaine Mitchener, Lore Lixenberg, Scanner and Max Eastley. He has published five books, including Rap Attack, Ocean of Sound, Haunted Weather, and Sinister Resonance: The Mediumship of the Listener. Since his first album, released on Brian Eno’s Obscure label in 1975, he has recorded nine solo albums, including Screen Ceremonies, Black Chamber and Sound Body, and many collaborations. As a critic has written for numerous publications, including The Wire, The Face, Leonardo Music Journal and Bookforum. Exhibitions he has curated include Sonic Boom at the Hayward Gallery, London, Playing John Cage at Arnolfini, Bristol, and Blow Up at Flat-Time House, London. His opera – Star-shaped Biscuit – was performed as an Aldeburgh Faster Than Sound project in September 2012 and his collaborative work – Who will go mad with me – was developed and performed with Alasdair Roberts, Sylvia Hallett and Luke Fowler at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in November 2013. Currently writing Into the Maelstrom: Improvisation, Music and the Dream of Freedom, he is also the co-creator of Sculpture events with artist Rie Nakajima. Since 2013 he has been Professorial Chair of Audio Culture and Improvisation at University of the Arts London
Glockenspiel – Mesmerizing and hypnotic post-rock from Aylesbury. Adrian Dollemore initially set up Glockenspiel releasing home recorded limited edition hand painted CDs via Krayon Recordings, described as “mesmerising guitar/loop/feedback playing/processing”. In 2006, Glockenspiel released the 24:48 EP, a series of jams, capturing the breadth and dynamics displayed at the live events. Then in 2007 Glockenspiel released their debut album Enspiel. This collection of pieces displays a more electronic feel against expansive yet minimal compositions. Recent live shows have included headlining at the Institute of Contemporary Art, support for Stars of The Lid, gallery performances and a Live evening session for Resonance FM. In 2013 the second full length album “Dupleix” was released on the Babel label.
