Country-blues meets electroacoustic music, lap-steel guitar meets live sampling and effects processing virtuoso Mike Cooper will share the space of Hundred Years Gallery with the experimental music composer and free improv performer Tasos Stamou (Greek bouzouki and live electronics). An evening of free folk solos exploring Western and Eastern music traditions in a contemporary manner and a duo which promises to present a unique interpretation of Greek rembetiko music as a source material for experimental urban folk music.
Mike Cooper: For the past 40 years Mike Cooper has been an international musical explorer, performing and recording, solo and in a number of inspired groupings and a variety of genres. Initially a folk-blues guitarist and singer songwriter his work has diversified to include improvised and electronic music, live music for silent films, radio art and sound installations. He is also a music journalist, writing features for magazines, particularly on Pacific music and musicians, a visual artist, film and video maker, collector of Hawaiian shirts and appears on more than 60 records to date.
Tasos Stamou is an electroacoustic music composer, a performer of free improvised music, an electronic instrument maker and a tutor, currently based in London. His recordings and performances include arrangements with self-modified sound toys (circuit bending) and found objects, electronic music equipment (modular synthesizers & computer applications), acoustic instruments (prepared zither, reeds, whistles, vocals, etc). He has presented live sets in solo projects and in collaborations with other experimentalists and improvisers (London Improvisers Orchestra, Evan Parker’s ‘Call them Improvisors’ orchestra, Adam Bohman, Valerio Tricoli, Kuupuu & Lau Nau, Terry Day, Adachi Tomomi, Ilan Manouach, Ignaz Schick etc.) around venues and festivals for innovative music. Since 2008 he runs ‘Kukuruku Recordings’, an independent label for ephemeral exploratory sound works. He is currently running workshop series for circuit bending & hacking sound toys for experimental sound production.
